One Book One Siouxland launches 9th season

OTcombo
One Book One Siouxland, the community-wide reading initiative in the tri-state area, launches its 9th season with Orphan Train: A Novel by Christina Baker Kline. One Book One Siouxland shares ideas and builds community through the experience of reading and discussing the same book, and exploring different perspectives through dramatization, music, film, and history. In this year’s selection, the author weaves together the story of a modern teen in foster care with that of riders on a 1920s Orphan Train.

Moving between contemporary Maine and Depression-era Minnesota, Orphan Train is a powerful tale of upheaval and resilience, of second chances and unexpected friendship. Vivian Daly lives a quiet life on the East Coast, but hidden in trunks among her belongings are vestiges of a turbulent past. Seventeen-year-old Molly knows that a community-service position helping an elderly widow clean her attic is the only thing keeping her out of “juvie,” or worse. While helping Vivian sort through her keepsakes, Molly realizes that she and Vivian aren't as different as they seem to be. And as her emotional barriers begin to crumble, Molly discovers that she has the power to help Vivian find answers to mysteries that have haunted her for her entire life—answers that will ultimately free them both.

During the 2014 One Book One Siouxland initiative, public book discussions will unite readers, while special presentations focus on real-life Orphan Train accounts—all designed to help participants experience the transition from one life to another with the children of the Orphan Train. Storyteller and actress Pippa White sets the stage at the kickoff event Saturday, February 22. “The Story of the Orphan Train,” an engaging dramatization based on actual riders’ stories, begins at 2 p.m. at the Sioux City Public Library, 529 Pierce St, Sioux City, IA.
